Sagar Dhakal (Politician)

Sagar Dhakal is a Nepali engineer and independent politician. He came to public attention after contesting the 2022 federal election from Dadeldhura against former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Early Life and Education

Sagar Dhakal was born in Gulmi District, Nepal. He studied engineering at Pulchowk Campus, where he ranked among the top students. He later obtained a master’s degree in Water Science, Policy and Management from the University of Oxford through the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Trust Scholarship.

Professional Career

Before joining Oxford, Dhakal worked in Nepal’s hydropower sector, including the 410 MW Nalsing Gad Storage Hydropower Project under the Ministry of Energy. He collaborated with international engineering firms MWH (USA) and SMEC (Australia) during the project.

Political Involvement

In the 2022 federal elections of Nepal, Dhakal ran as an independent candidate from Dadeldhura against former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

According to election reports, former Prime Minister Deuba won from Dadeldhura with a large margin, while Dhakal finished as an independent challenger representing a new generation of candidates.

Official vote counts showed that former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba secured 25,534 votes, while independent candidate Sagar Dhakal received 13,042 votes in the Dadeldhura constituency, resulting in a clear victory margin of over 12,000 votes.
